About Mathyness

5 minute read

Mathematics is more than numbers, equations, and formulas—it’s a profoundly human pursuit. At its heart, math is a social activity, shaped by the connections we form with others. Those who fall in love with math often point to a person who sparked their curiosity: a teacher who made it come alive, a family member who nurtured their interest, or a classmate who shared in the joy of discovery.

But the beauty of math isn’t in the questions we ask or even the answers we uncover—it’s in the journey between them. The process of problem-solving, reasoning, and exploration is where curiosity thrives and where true understanding is built. It takes a mathematician to illuminate that path, to show not only how math works but also why it matters. At Mathyness, we believe this spark of understanding and curiosity can change lives.

Our mission is to connect passionate mathematicians with students across the nation, transforming how math is taught, learned, and experienced. Mathyness isn’t just about tutoring—it’s about empowering students to see math as a tool to unlock opportunities, sharpen their thinking, and shape their futures.

We’re starting where the need is most urgent: college students. Many find themselves on the edge of failure in a math class that could derail their plans. A failed course might mean delaying graduation, missing out on a dream career, or feeling stuck. We help these students turn things around, not just so they can pass their classes but so they can regain confidence and keep moving toward their goals—whether it’s starting a family, advancing their career, or simply feeling capable and prepared for what’s next.

Once we’ve made an impact in college math, we’ll work backwards. We’ll prepare high school students to succeed before they ever reach those critical moments. For those heading to college, we’ll help them build strong foundations in math. For others pursuing alternative paths, we’ll emphasize practical, real-world applications of math, such as managing personal finances, budgeting, and planning for the future.

Our vision extends even further. We want to inspire younger students to embrace math as a tool for exploration and creativity, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning. At the same time, we aim to support teachers with innovative tools and strategies to help them succeed, even in challenging environments like overcrowded classrooms, underfunded schools, or periods of disruption and closures.

We’re also committed to helping students with learning disabilities, like dyscalculia, by creating tools and resources tailored to their needs. Everyone deserves the chance to succeed in math, no matter their starting point or the challenges they face.

At Mathyness, we aren’t just teaching math. We’re reimagining how it’s shared, how it’s understood, and how it can open doors to a better future. Because math isn’t just a subject—it’s a journey, and we’re here to help every student take the next step.
